Mabel is our second ridgeback. We had already fallen head over heals in love with the breed after getting Cirque. We pestered Susan Ralston of the Ridge View Ranch Kennel for months to let us have another one of her dogs. When she told us Cirque’s mom was going to breed again we started thinking of call names. We decided to call our new pup Mabel after my grandmother who was quite the rebel in her youth. Mabel has proven to be much like her name sake wild, independent, and fun loving. She was so wild as a young pup so while I was cleaning the house I carried a piece of a fishing pole with rabbit fur on a string tied to it just to keep her entertained. Mabel is fun to socialize and we spend a lot of time at the off leash dog park. Other dog owners began approaching us asking if they could get their dogs “Mabel-ized”. We considered hiring her out as a doggy personal trainer when people we had never met started approaching us asking if our girl was Mabel and wondering if their energetic dogs could play with her. I guess she has developed a reputation.
The rabbit fur on the string must have kicked in her prey drive because she got her JC and earned 2 points toward her AKC Field Championship at her first trial. At her first LGRA straight race she came in second and earned her first point toward her Gazehound Racing Championship. She also loves NOTRA oval track racing.
She has proven to be a natural in the conformation ring. She was Best Ridgeback Puppy in AKC shows a few times. Mabel won the Best Ridge contest at the supported entry in Greeley, Colorado 2005 and 2007. She was a finalist for the best ridge at the 2006  and 2007 RRCUS National Specialties. She finished her AKC Championship, owner handled, in October 2006 a couple of months shy of her 2nd birthday.
Mabel went on her first backpacking trip in Idaho when she was a year old she and her brother decided the forest was their own personal agility course. She loves hiking in the desert, but we have to watch her as she likes to steal breakfast from owls. The thing she enjoyed the most durring the 2007 National Specialty was the Hunting Test held by The Hunting Ridgback Association where she was among the first ridgebacks to qualify on medium sized game, earning her HRQ3.
She will be taking her first agility class soon and we hope she will be a Canine Good Citizen before too long.
Mabel is a pure joy to live with and keeps us smiling with her antics. She reminds us not to take life too seriously and to always live in the moment.
